  2. What is AmigaFax?
  3. =================

  5. AmigaFax is a software package that, in combination with a FaxModem,
  6. allows you to send and receive facsimile information from your Amiga
  7. computer.
  8. Received faxes can be viewed, printed, forwarded to other fax machines,
  9. and saved as ILBM files which can then be accessed using many standard
  10. Amiga programs.
  11. You can transmit text, ILBM graphics, and combinations of these as
  12. faxes. Using the AmigaFax command language you can add text from
  13. any Amiga font, along with logos and ILBM graphics, to create
  14. high quality multi-page fax documents.

  16. AmigaFax can be set up to automatically send documents to multiple
  17. recipients, to send faxes at or after set times, and to answer incoming
  18. fax calls automatically.

  20. Faxes can be printed on plain paper, using your normal Amiga printer.

  22. AmigaFax is highly configurable, allowing you to set up a custom
  23. environment that best suits your hardware and way of working.

  28. Automatic Reception
  29. -------------------

  31. AmigaFax may be configured to receive faxes in the background, or to
  32. answer an already ringing line in Fax mode. Autoanswer may also be
  33. integrated with a UUCP or BBS environment, where incoming calls may be
  34. Fax or data, by using a specially modified version of the getty
  35. program that recognises Fax calls.

  37. Automatic Transmission

  40. Faxes may be queued for transmission after a particular time, to take
  41. advantage of lower off-peak telecom rates, for example. You may specify
  42. the number of times to try before giving up on transmission, and the
  43. period at which retry attempts should be made. All call progress is
  44. logged, and progress may be monitored from the main program. Call
  45. logging displays when attempts were made, the success or failure of
  46. the call, and the Called Number ID of the remote Fax machine reached.

  48. Multiple Recipients

  51. Fax numbers may be entered either directly, or using defineable
  52. aliases. Therefore instead of sending to `99123456', you could send it
  53. to `Fred'. In the same way, an alias can refer to a list of other
  54. aliases, or numbers, so that one fax could be sent to `Customers',
  55. representing a list of customers.

  57. Flexible Fax Viewer

  60. The Fax viewer allows you to view a fax document at scales of from 1:1
  61. to 1:8. A 1:3 scale is used by default, which generally gives a quite
  62. readable image while still fitting the entire Fax width across a
  63. standard Amiga screen. you can easily zoom in on areas of particular
  64. interest if required.

  66. Powerful Document Builder

  69. This allows you to mix any Amiga font or ILBM graphic on a page,
  70. include text, ILBM or AmigaFax command files anywhere on a page or in
  71. a document, perform alignment at character or pixel level, justify
  72. text regardless of font size, automatically add standard information
  73. such as address, signature, logo, and current time/date.

  75. Highly User Configurable

  78. The configuration file allows you to set the system up to suit your
  79. requirements. You can define your prefered editor for text and for
  80. graphics, set a standard file to use as a template when creating new
  81. Fax documents, customize your dial type (pulse/tone, special prefix to
  82. get outside line, etc), set the Caller ID string to identify yourself
  83. to remote Fax machines, define the modem type you are using, and set
  84. many system default values.

  86. Uses Preferences Printer

  89. By using the Amiga Preferences printer to print out the documents, you
  90. can tradeoff speed for resolution as you require.

  92. Workbench or CLI interface

  95. AmigaFax can be run either from the workbench, or from a shell or CLI
  96. interface. In either case, an easy to use graphical presentation makes
  97. operation straightforward.

  99. System Requirements
  100. ===================

  102. AmigaFax requires AmigaDOS version 1.3 or greater. It operates with
  103. AmigaDOS 2.0, and will run on Amigas from the original A1000
  104. through to the A3000. It is possible to run on an unexpanded A1000
  105. with 512K RAM and 1 disk drive, but in this case memory and disk
  106. restraints will limit the number and size of faxes that may be
  107. generated or received. In general the more memory and disk available
  108. the better. For unattended Auto-receive operation a hard disk system
  109. is highly desirable.
